Peter Brett designed the Rival 31 in 1967 and it was first launched in 1968.

Twenty-two R31s were built. “Gentoo of Antarctica” was previously known as “Heather of Hamble”, and prior to her purchase in March 2002, “Queens Ransom”.

This vessel was launched in January 1969, being one of the earlier boats out of the Rival stable. Gentoo is thought to be 4th or 5th in production with a sail number 2413.

Whilst it is known that R31’s have sailed in many parts of the world, we are unsure if one has ever completed a circumnavigation. If anyone has any information relating to this, we would be very pleased to hear from you

Storm Jib Design

Fred Griffin, a valued volunteer and an accomplished artist, has been busily restoring most of Gentoo’s woodwork.

He has also put his artistic talents to use on the Storm Jib by creating a 9ft Penguin, which will advertise our arrival at the various destinations.

The design has been drawn and the templates cut, and the purchase of Ripstop nylon has been made and production is underway.
